“I am truly humbled by the support and confidence the Danbury voters have placed in me over the last 12 years. My service to this community continues unwavering as I begin my seventh term; there is still more that is left to be done and I am excited to be a part of the bright future of Danbury,” Boughton, a Republican, said in a statement.

Boughton, who was re-elected in a landslide vote in November, has become famous for his use of Twitter. Using the name @MayorMark, he was cited in a recent Top 15 list from Business Insider on "Politicians Who Are Killing It On Twitter."

Boughton couldn't resist, tweeting in reply, "#BigPoppa makes the "A" list for politicians who tweet." with the link to the story and "#thatswhatimtalkingabout."

Boughton is also beloved by the students at Danbury High, who often beg the mayor for snow days via his Twitter account.

A Danbury native, attended Danbury public schools and graduated from Danbury High School in 1982. Boughton earned a bachelor's degree in history from the Central Connecticut State University and a master's degree in educational psychology from Western Connecticut State University.

Boughton served in the U.S. Army Reserve where he achieved the rank of Sergeant. He returned to Danbury High School to teach social studies.

He served as a member of the Danbury Planning Commission from 1995 to 1998 and later went on to serve three years as Connecticut's 138th District State Representative.

During that time, Boughton was ranking member of the Environment Committee, as well as member of the Education Committee, and achieved a perfect voting record.

In 2001, Boughton won in his first bid for mayor.

He is married to Phyllis Boughton, owner and manager of Connecticut Kitchen and Bath located in Danbury.

But Boughton may not be around forever in Danbury: In August, he announced the formation of an exploratory committee for a possible run for governor
