Danbury Rep. Dan Carter Calls Gun Bill 'Ineffective'

DANBURY, Conn. – New gun legislation passed overwhelmingly in the Connecticut legislature, but state Rep. Dan Carter, R-Danbury and Redding, said "our families deserved better" and called the bills "overreaching and ineffective" in a statement.

“It is with a lot of serious thought and a heavy heart that I vote against this package of legislation,” Carter, who also represents part of Newtown and Bethel, said in a statement released by his office. “I understand the political need to get something done, but everyone affected by this tragedy deserves more than a series of hollow laws that are touted as a step forward but won’t make us any safer or prevent any more horrific acts of disturbed and evil monsters.”

Carter said in his statement the bill contained some "good measures," some of which he introduced, including universal background checks and permits for long guns. Be he said he couldn't support a bill that fell short of "actually preventing violence in a meaningful way, especially in our cities."

"Understanding the root causes of violence were never even addressed in any of the concepts put forward," Carter said.

He was mostly concerned with what he called the unaddressed "real solutions" to gun violence, which included stronger storage requirements and identification for those prohibited from owning guns. These, he said in his statement, would be more effective ways of halting gun violence than banning sales.

“Moving forward I am hopeful we will craft reforms that will make a difference, including improvements in mental health services,” Carter said.
