Firefighters responded to the two-story home at 12:31 a.m. Wednesday to 9 Stevens St., near the fire headquarters, to multiple 911 calls, Assistant Fire Chief Mark Omasta said in a statement.
The home was heavily involved in fire when units arrived, Omasta said.
Firefighters rescued an elderly man who had escaped to a first floor roof through a window, Omasta said. He sustained burns and smoke inhalation and was transported to Danbury Hospital, Omasta said.
EMS transported a second patient, a woman with burns and smoke inhalation who escaped the structure on her own, Omasta said.
While searching the home, fire crews found a woman on the second floor who had died, Omasta said.
Eight other occupants — four adults and four children — escaped the flames on their own with no injuries, Omasta said.
Two firefighters were transported to Danbury Hospital, with non-life-threatening injuries, he said.
The three-alarm fire was determined under control at 3:14 a.m. and is under investigation by the Danbury Fire Marshal’s division with assistance from the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
