The accident occurred at 8 p.m. Tuesday on James Street at Holley Street Extension, police said.

According to eyewitnesses, the accident occurred when a gray Nissan Versa was traveling east on James Street at a high rate of speed, police said.

Witnesses said they heard tires squealing and the vehicle was bottoming out as it headed east. The car veered into the westbound lane, as the operator appeared to lose control, police said.

The car then went partially airborne and struck a stone pillar at the intersection, flipped onto its side and came to rest, police said.

Three occupants of the vehicle, Wilfredo Abreu, 24, of Waterbury; Andrew Castillo, 25, of Danbury; and Jamie Guadalupe-Picard, 28, of Danbury, were found outside the vehicle after the crash, police said. At least one had been ejected through the windshield, police said.

All three were transported to Danbury Hospital.

Abreu’s injuries were considered serious, but he was in stable condition Wednesday. Injuries to Castillo and Guadalupe-Picard were less serious, and both were also in stable condition, police added.
