DANBURY, Conn. — A 20-year-old Bethel man was caught riding a stolen dirt bike after troopers spotted him doing wheelies on I-84 in Danbury, according to state police.

The incident occurred at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 15, when troopers from Troop A in Southbury were parked near Exit 4 on I-84 westbound in the right shoulder, assisting with a disabled motor vehicle.

As the troopers were assisting with the disabled vehicle, two dirt bikes traveling at a slow speed on I-84 did "wheelies" as they passed the troopers, state police said.

A trooper pulled out behind the dirt bikes with emergency lights and siren activated, state police said. The dirt bike operators did not stop and left the highway at Exit 4, state police said.

The dirt bikes continued on Mill Plain Road in Danbury, traveling with traffic, state police said.

The state trooper shut off the cruiser's emergency lights and siren and followed, state police said.

One of the dirt bike drivers turned onto a dead end road, boxing himself in, and stopped for the trooper, state police said.

Troopers determined that the dirt bike was stolen out of New Milford earlier this year, state police said.

The driver, Jose Javier Garcia-Polanco, 20, of Bethel, was taken into custody and transported to Troop A. He was charged with third-degree larceny motor vehicle theft and several motor vehicle charges.

Garcia-Polanco was released after posting $1,000 bond and was scheduled to appear at Danbury superior court on May 5.

The driver of the second dirt bike was found and issued an infraction for several motor vehicle violations.
