Howard Ward, of Danbury, was driving north on Main Street at about 7:30 p.m. when he attempted to turn left onto Rose Street, the police report said. Ward then hit a pedestrian in the crosswalk who was crossing Rose Street, said police, who characterized the accident as "serious."

Ward told officers he didn't see the man in the marked crosswalk until it was too late and couldn't avoid hitting him, police said.

Police charged Ward with operating with a suspended license, failure to grant right of way to a pedestrian in a crosswalk and failure to exercise due care to avoid a pedestrian.

The victim was transported to Danbury Hospital for treatment of his injuries. No information was available regarding his condition.

Any witnesses to the accident should contact Sgt. Rory DeRocco of the Danbury Police Traffic Division or the Danbury Police Traffic Division at 203-797-2157 or 203-797-2156.
