When officers arrived, a male suspect came out of the home armed with a shotgun and ran into the nearby woods, police said.
New Milford officers set up a perimeter, and requested a police negotiator and K9 team to assist with finding the man in the woods, police said.
The man eventually came out of the woods and approached the officers with the shotgun in his hand, police said.
After the male suspect ignored demands from officers to drop the shotgun, at least one New Milford police officer discharged at least round from their duty weapon, striking the man, police said.
New Milford police officers immediately rendered first aid, and EMS transported the male to Danbury Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
At the request of the State's Attorney's Office and the New Milford Police Department, Connecticut State Police detectives from the Western District Major Crime responded to the scene and took over the investigation.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death.
The name of the deceased, and the involved officer or officers was withheld at this time.
No police officers were injured.
