Units were dispatched to a reported fire on Jefferson Avenue, upon arrival units saw smoke coming from the rear porch, said James Gagliardo, public information officer for the Danbury Fire Department.
Moments earlier, Joe Mead, an official with the Danbury Health Department who lives across the street, heard someone banging on a door, Gagliardo said. When he looked outside he was told the rear porch was on fire.
Mead then rushed to grab a 5-gallon bucket and went to the rear of the house where the fire was extending up the back corner. He filled the bucket from a nearby stream three times in an attempt to extinguish the fire. He was able to knock down some of the fire which hindered it from extending any further.
After Deputy Chief Charly Slagle established command, E22 arrived on location and advanced a hose line to the rear and extinguished the fire.
Truck Company 1 searched the house and found no one home.
Units quickly knocked down the fire which was contained to the exterior porch of the house.
The Danbury Fire Marshals office was requested to the scene and is investigating the cause of the fire.
No injuries were reported from the scene.
