A man who police say drove at twice the speed limit has been charged with DUI and possession of narcotics in Darien.

Darien Police say they observed a black Volkswagen Passat being driven at a high speed eastbound on Post Road in the area of Center Street on Saturday, Oct. 5 around 1:15 a.m.

The vehicle’s speed measured 52 mph in a 25 mph zone, police say.

The officer allegedly followed the vehicle and observed the driver almost strike a curb before over-correcting and crossing the double-yellow lines of Mansfield Avenue.

A traffic stop was initiated and the driver, identified as James Tovar, 32, of Darien, allegedly admitted to consuming alcohol earlier that evening.

Tovar was asked to participate in a series of field sobriety tests, which police say he did not pass.

While officers were inventorying Tovar’s vehicle prior to towing, they allegedly discovered a plastic bag containing marijuana on the front passenger’s seat.

Tovar was arrested and transported to headquarters, where police say a breathalyzer test gave a BAC reading of .1997.

Tovar was charged with the following:

  • Operating under the influence
  • Failure to drive right
  • Traveling too fast for conditions
  • Possession of narcotics

Tovar was released on a $250 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, Oct. 15.
