Listen: 911 Call Reports Abandoned Baby In Danbury

DANBURY, Conn. — Danbury police on Thursday released 911 calls and photos of clothing in an effort to find the mother of a baby found abandoned behind a Main Street market on Sunday.

Police received a 911 call at 11:38 p.m. Sunday that a newborn baby boy had been found wrapped in several pieces of women's clothing in the bushes behind Zaytuna Grocery Store at 397 Main St., police said. The baby was reportedly cold and crying with his umbilical cord still attached, but was listed in good condition on Wednesday, according to the News Times.

The location where the baby was found is about a block away from the police station.

The baby was still being evaluated at Danbury Hospital on Thursday, police said, and the Special Victims Unit is still actively investigating the case. In an effort to help identify the mother, they have released audio of the 911 call, as well as photos of the clothing that the baby boy was found wrapped in.

"Our main concern at this time is for the mother, who may need medical attention or is a victim of a crime herself," Danbury Police said.

Under Connecticut's Safe Haven Act for Newborns, the parent of an infant 30 days or younger can leave the baby at a hospital and not face prosecution for abandonment. For more information on the laws, click here.
