The Danbury Fire Department responded to over 20 storm-related emergency calls between 9 p.m. and midnight, Assistant Fire Chief Mark Omasta said in a statement Friday.
"That was one wild storm," Mayor Mark Boughton said via Twitter @MayorMark. "We have trees like this down all over Danbury. Gonna be a busy day."
Clapboard Ridge Road was closed with wires down late Thursday, and most of the emergency calls came from the northern part of the city, Omasta said.
Flash flooding and downed electrical wires were reported throughout Danbury. As of 8:45 a.m. Friday, a total of 85 customers were still without power in the city, Eversource said.
Lightning strikes were determined to be the cause of a fire behind a dryer at a home on Padanaram Road and a roof fire in detached garage on The Crest Way near Lake Candlewood, Omasta said.
A home at 18 Old Forty Acre Mountain Road was charged with electricity due to downed power lines and a downed tree was burning on the house, he said.
A small fire was reported in a TV from lightning on Brittania Drive in Sterling Woods, he said.
No injuries were reported at these fires.
Multiple roads were closed due to flash flooding and downed power lines, Omasta said, with some manhole covers dislodged due to rushing water.
Many motorists were caught or stranded in the flooding roadways in low-lying areas, he said.
There was also a storm-related gas leak on Stetson Place, where gas service was shut down to five units, Omasta said.
All Danbury career and volunteer fire companies were employed on this busy evening, he said.
Fire crews were continuing to respond to storm-related downed wires and tree on Friday morning, Omasta said.
