DANBURY, Conn. -- An elderly man was injured Thursday when he was pinned underneath a pontoon boat while helping to haul it out of the water at the Danbury Yacht Club, police said Friday.

The accident occurred at about 12:30 p.m. Oct. 29 at the Danbury Yacht Club at 23 E. Hayestown Road along Candlewood Lake.

According to police, Myron Whelchel, 89, of Danbury, was assisting with the removal of the pontoon boat from the docks at the club. As the boat was on the trailer, it rolled off, throwing Whelchel from the boat and pinning him underneath it, police said.

Whelchel was transported to nearby Danbury Hospital by ambulance. Police called it a "serious" accident but did not detail his injuries or condition.

Any witnesses to the accident are asked to contact Sgt. Rory DeRocco or Officer Marcel Kruijs at 203-797-2157.
