Danbury police responded at 1:20 a.m. May 5, which was a rainy night, to a serious motor vehicle collision in the area of 79 Coalpit Hill Road, Danbury.
The Bethel Police Department was attempting to stop a 2005 Toyota Camry when the driver engaged officers in pursuit, police said.
The driver led the Bethel police into Danbury, where the driver lost control and struck a tree, police said. Both the operator and passenger were transported to Danbury Hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the collision, police said.
The pursuit began near Mansfield Street and Fleetwood Avenue in Bethel when the driver refused to stop, the News-Times said.
The crash occurred less than a half-mile away, police said. The pursuit began at a normal rate of speed, the News-Time said, but the driver speeded up and began to drive erratically.
It took firefighters from Bethel and Danbury more than 30 minutes to free the driver and passenger from the crash, the News-Time said.
The driver later died at Danbury hospital.
The names of the driver and passenger have not been released awaiting notification of the families.
This collision is under investigation by the Danbury Police Department’s Traffic Division.
