The 11- week program is open to residents, city employees and business owners in Danbury. The course is intended to give individuals the opportunity to learn more about the operations of the police department and police procedures.
The mission of the Citizen’s Police Academy is to foster an enhanced understanding and cooperation between the department and the community. It's not intended to make citizens into police officers, but rather to heighten the awareness of both the public and police in an effort to develop a working partnership between the two.
The objective is to provide interactive instruction in many basic police department tasks as well as provide an opportunity for individuals to role play and have hands-on experience with the tools of the police trade.
The Citizen’s Police Academy requires a commitment of one night per week for 11 weeks. The sessions, which run from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., begin on Tuesday, March 8, and continue every Tuesday through May 17 from 7 to 9 p.m.
In addition to a tour of the state-of the-art facility, topics will include laws of arrest, penal code, patrol procedures, crime scene investigation, defensive tactics, as well as an informative session on the weapons that are currently in use by the department.
Each applicant will be subject to a criminal background investigation. Interested applicants should pick up an application at the Danbury Police Department, 375 Main St. The academy will be limited to 25 participants on a first come/ first serve basis.
