The department reported it has seen an increase of victims reporting phone calls from the “IRS” – Internal Revenue Service. The callers are informing the victims that the “IRS” has a warrant for their arrest. That if the victim pays the “IRS” that it will remove the warrant.

Remember the IRS will never:

  •  Call to demand immediate payment, nor will the agency call about taxes owed without first having mailed you a bill. All initial contact by the IRS will be via mail.
  • Demand that you pay taxes without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe.
  • Require you to use a specific payment method for your taxes, such as a prepaid debit card or I-Tunes Gift Cards.
  • Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone.
  • Threaten to bring in local police or other law-enforcement groups to have you
  • arrested for not paying.

If you receive a similar phone call, DO NOT give any personal information. Report the phone call to the following:  https://www.treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam.shtm or call 1-800- 366-4484.
