Danbury Police Officer Hit By Car While Directing Traffic

DANBURY, Conn. – A Danbury police officer was hit by a car and thrown 15 feet while she was directing traffic Tuesday morning, the department said in a statement.

The accident occurred at about 6:50 a.m. Tuesday near the intersection of Hoyt Street and Rose Hill Avenue, police said.

Officer Brittany Alvarez was assigned at this location to direct traffic during an ongoing construction area, police said. She was signaling southbound traffic at this intersection to stop, while wearing her OSHA-approved traffic safety apparel, police said.

Antonio Desousa of Hill Top Manor in Danbury was traveling south on Rose Hill Avenue in his 2002 Dodge Stratus, police said. Desousa said he did not see Alvarez, and he struck her with the left front of his vehicle and vaulted her about 15 feet, police said.

Alvarez was transported to Danbury Hospital by ambulance for treatment of injuries, police said.

Danbury police did not elaborate on the extent or seriousness of her injuries.

No charges have been filed in the accident, but it remains under investigation by the Danbury Police Department’s Traffic Division.
