Danbury Police K-9 Helps In Arrest Of Ax-Swinging Man

DANBURY, Conn. -- A Danbury man who waved an ax at people during a dispute over money was arrested late Wednesday with the help of Danbury Police K-9 Zeke, police said.

Anthony Ramirez, 24, of Danbury, was arrested on charges of swinging a stolen ax at people.

Danbury officers were called to Hillside Street on a report of a man swinging an ax at people at 10:08 p.m. Wednesday, police said in a statement.

The suspect, Anthony Ramirez, 24, of Danbury, initially failed to comply with officers' commands to drop the ax, police said. Ramirez dropped the ax after Danbury Police K-9 Zeke got out of his handler's cruiser and began to bark at him, police said.

According to witnesses, Ramirez went to a Hillside Street home and started an argument over money, police said. He was asked to leave and did, but Ramirez returned moments later with an ax stolen from a neighboring house, police said.

Ramirez then started swinging at the victims' garage and car, which was parked in the driveway, police said. When the victims approached him, Ramirez started to swing the ax at them as well, police said.

Ramirez was charged with reckless endangerment, sixth-degree larceny, two counts of criminal mischief and two counts of breach of peace.

He was transported to headquarters, and his bond was set at $50,000
