Danbury Man, 28, Busted On Drug-Dealing Charges At Gas Station

DANBURY, Conn. — Danbury officers with an arrest warrant for a suspected drug dealer tracked him down and arrested him Friday, Aug. 18, at a Newtown Road gas station, police said.

The warrants for the arrest of Elbion “Merk” Barnes, 28, were issued after an investigation into complaints that he was selling illegal drugs in various locations in the Danbury area, police said.

The search and seizure warrants also covered Barnes' home at  51 Main St., #33, Danbury, and his phone.

While conducting a surveillance of locations that Barnes is known to frequent, he was found and followed to the gas station, police said. At that time, members of the surveillance team approached his stopped vehicle and seized him, police said.

In the process, a quantity of narcotics packaged for sale and U.S. currency were in plain view to members of the surveillance team, police said. Barnes was placed under arrest and transported to the Danbury Police Department.

Investigators also proceeded to his Main Street address, where they found a safe owned by Barnes that contained more narcotics, packaging material and other drug paraphernalia, police said.

Barnes was charged with possession of narcotics, possession of narcotics with intent to sell, possession of narcotics within 1,500 feet of a prohibited place, possession of narcotics with intent to sell within 1,500 feet of a prohibited place, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of drug paraphernalia within 1,500 feet of a prohibited place, risk of injury to a child and operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license.

He was held on $50,000 bond.

The warrants were executed by members of the Danbury Police Department’s Special Investigations Division and the Community Conditions Unit.
