One possibility that authorities are exploring is static electricity, fire officials told Lohud.com. Witnesses reported a strong smell of gas in the air at the station on the day of the explosion, so it is possible that a static spark from when Wentroble touched the gas pump set off the blast, LoHud.com reported.

Wentroble remains in a medically induced coma at Bridgeport Hospital while doctors perform skin grafts to repair the second- and third-degree burns that cover most of his body, according to LoHud.com.
