DANBURY, Conn. - Jack Raymond Bassett of Danbury died Tuesday, July 2. He was 88.
Bassett was born Dec. 24, 1924, in Waterloo, N.Y.; son of George A. and Lena M. (Boak) Bassett. He grew up in Waterloo, N.Y. until he joined the U.S. Marines for World War II. He served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater during World War II from April 1944 to October 1945, landing on Peleliu Sept. 16, 1944. He was also a veteran of the Korean Conflict from September 1950 to November 1951, including the Inchon landing, Sept. 15, 1950. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps. a total of 22 years, retiring in 1966 as an avionics radar technician with the rank of gunnery sergeant (E7) to provide a better life for his family.
After retiring from the Marine Corps., Bassett settled with his family in Sleepy Hollow, Danbury. He then worked in various area companies, retiring from Perkin Elmer Corporation.
Bassett is survived by daughter, Ellen Cote; son-in-law, Ernest; a grandson; son, Mark and Diane Monhollan; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Jeanne (Weber) Bassett; sister, Emma A. Smith; and his brothers, Frederick H. and George N. Bassett.
Calling hours are Sunday, July 7 from 2 to 5 p.m. at Green Funeral Home, 57 Main Street, Danbury. Burial will be at St. Peter's Cemetery after a short service at the funeral home at 11 a.m. Monday, July 8.
