Stoppel was born May 17, 1921, in Brooklyn, N.Y., son of Ernest A. and Viola M. (Fritz) Stoppel. He graduated from Stevens Institute of Technology with a degree in mechanical engineering and served in the U.S. Navy as an engineering officer for four years during World War II. He worked at Doran Brothers in Danbury until his retirement. He was a member of the First Congregational Church in Danbury, and was a longtime member of the choir there. He was also a longtime member of the Mad Hatters Barbershop Chorus.
Stoppel is survived his wife, Doris (Mowat) Stoppel; daughter, Carol Stoppel of Danbury; son, Robert Stoppel (Kathleen) of Trumbull; sister, Shirley Mae Stoppel of Brookfield; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; and brother, Earle Stoppel.
Calling hours are Wednesday, July 31 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Hull Funeral Home. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 1 at the Hull Funeral Home, 60 Division St., Danbury. Burial will follow at Wooster Cemetery, Danbury.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Stoppel’s name may be made to the First Congregational Church, 164 Deer Hill Ave., Danbury, CT 06810.
