DANBURY, Conn. – Charles Daniel Coakley of Danbury died Nov. 13. He was 90.
He was born April 14, 1922, in Easton, Pa., to Charles B. and Elizabeth Coakley. He graduated from Temple University and served in the U.S. Navy as a pilot during World War II. He was recognized by the State of Connecticut and awarded a medal for his wartime service.
Coakley was married to Hilda Willis Coakley for 54 years. He worked as an accountant at James River Company, formerly the American Can Co. for 40 years. He was an active member and secretary for the Georgetown Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10190.
During his retirement, Coakley enjoyed golfing, bowling and boating on Candlewood Lake. He loved celebrating holidays surrounded by his children and grandchildren. He also loved playing the piano and singing for his family.
Coakley is survived by five children, Carolyn Barrett, of Ridgefield, Peggy (David) Spakowski, of Naugatuck, Conn., Kathleen (Gary) Williamson, of Danbury, Charles M. (Lynn) Coakley, of Danbury, and Mary (Edward) Beltran, of Gold River, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Thomas Coakley.
Visitation was Tuesday at Green Funeral Home in Danbury. Funeral services were Wednesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Danbury.
