Nor'Easter Pummels Danbury With Heavy Snow; More Is On The Way

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- Northern Fairfield County is not out of the woods from Thursday's nor'easter as sleet mixes in with the snow, which continues to pile up.

The snow changed to sleet and rain in coastal Fairfield County on Thursday afternoon, but the snow continued to fall in towns north of the Merritt Parkway. Heavy bands dumped snow at rates of 2 to 4 inches per hour Thursday morning.

Snow was slowing in the mid-afternoon, but the storm was expected to regain strength in the evening and bring more snow and winds from 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph.

Accumulations of 10 to 16 inches are predicted in lower Fairfield County and 14 to 20 inches in northern parts.

By 1:30 p.m. Thursday, the National Weather Service was reporting the follow unofficial snow totals:

Darien: 13 inches
New Canaan: 12.8 inches
Norwalk: 12 inches
Greenwich: 11 inches
Stamford: 8 inches
Danbury: 7.1 inches
Weston: 7 inches

Drivers are still being warned to stay off of roads on Thursday. A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 6 a.m. Friday, with overnight snow expected.

The heavy snow with a trace of ice is expected to make travel dangerous with visibility of less than a quarter mile at times.
