Near Drowning At Chelsea Piers, Plane Crash Top Week's News In Danbury

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. — It was a busy week for news in Fairfield County, with a near-drowning at a large sports facility, a deadly drug overdose at a fast-food eatery and a fatal plane crash near the Danbury Airport.

In case you missed it, here are some of the most-read stories of the past week in the Daily Voice: 

A 5-year-old boy from New Canaan nearly drowned in a pool at Chelsea Piers in Stamford. The boy, who was attending a day camp for soccer, remained unconscious Friday in the intensive care unit of Yale-New Haven Hospital. 

A Cessna SkyHawk crashed into heavy brush on a hillside above the Dog Park just after takeoff last weekend at the Danbury Airport. The Redding man piloting the rented plane, Mark Stern, died of his injuries and two other men were injured in the crash.

Larry “Love” Tinsley, a 62-year-old homeless man, was charged in the gruesome murder of a Bridgeport man who was shot and then set on fire inside a stolen SUV in June. He is accused of pouring gas on the dead man's body. 

A man in his 20s was found dead of a drug overdose in the bathroom of a Burger King on Boston Avenue in Bridgeport.

Yoriko McClure of Bridgewater was so thrilled with the outcome of her coronary bypass surgery at Danbury Hospital that she is making a donation of $3 million to transform its cardiac operating room into a multi-functional cardiovascular surgical suite.

It could have been a scene straight out of "Baby Driver" as Brittany McDow, 27, led Stamford police on a chase, crashing into several parked cars as well as police cruisers along the way, police said.

Amy Barnouw of Fairfield is on a mission. Driven by a desire to provide healthier beverages for her three kids, Barnouw and her husband launched Planet Fuel Beverage Company with a line of organic, lower-sugar juices.

Two childhood friends opened a unique new dessert place called Drop & Fry in Stamford. Their specialty gives a hot and cold taste sensation: They batter-dip-and-fry pound cake-coated balls of ice cream. 

A new restaurant dubbed J. Lawrence Downtown has opened in Bethel in the historic opera house building. It's place where friends, family, and community come together in a relaxed, casual atmosphere.

When architect George Perham headed out to his latest project, he didn’t need a map. Forty-seven years after his 1970 graduation, Perham was headed back to Stratford High School to see the $125-million renovation on his alma mater come to life.
