For Danbury Branch customers, shuttle train service was being provided between the Danbury and Merritt 7 stations due to overhead wire damage, Metro-North said.
Then, from Merritt 7, shuttle bus service was being provided to the Stamford station for New York-bound train service.
In the other direction, bus service was being provided from South Norwalk to the Merritt 7 station for connecting train service back to Danbury.
Also, there was limited service on the main New Haven Line, with no inbound to New York service at the South Norwalk, Rowayton, Darien and Noroton Heights stations.
All customers should go to Stamford station for train service to Grand Central, Metro-North said.
Metro-North was urging customers to seek alternate transportation.
Earlier in the day, Metro-North service along the main New Haven Line was disrupted after the Walk swing bridge over the Norwalk River failed to close properly. That halted train service for much of the afternoon.
Even after the bridge was closed, only one track was available for trains in the area, Metro-North said.
A Metro-North spokesman said it was not known why the problem occurred.
The Walk bridge, which carries Metro-North, Amtrak and freight trains over the Norwalk River, is nearly 120 years old.
The aging bridge malfunctioned twice during daytime rush-hour travel times in summer 2014, failing to close properly and stranding hundreds of Metro-North riders along the New Haven Line and causing delays, complaints and headaches.
The state and Metro-North are considering options for replacing the bridge.
