But not only was no one hurt in the accident, the car didn't even appear that badly damaged. It was the second train vs. a vehicle accident this week in Connecticut.
The red sedan was towed from the accident scene and taken away by a flatbed truck at 4 p.m. The train began to move shortly thereafter and was moved to the yard for inspection, officials said.
The crash occurred at a private crossing on Railroad Place off Commerce Street near a boatyard, said Meredith Daniels, a Metro-North spokesman. The site is along the Norwalk River and is just north of the Stepping Stones Museum for Children.
"There were no injuries reported on the train or to the occupant of the car," Daniels said. About 50 customers were on the train — which was the 1:04 p.m. out of Grand Central — when the accident occurred, she said.
A bus was sent to pick up the passengers and take them to their final destinations, Daniels said.
Metro-North personnel and police were on the scene Tuesday afternoon but would not comment.
Train service was interrupted along the Danbury branch for a few hours, and substitute buses took one run of passengers.
The accident occurred between the South Norwalk station and the Merritt 7 station, on the Danbury branch rails, which is not on the main New Haven Line.
Daniels said it was not clear why the car was on the tracks, and she would not know why until the investigation was complete.
"Don't stop on the grade crossing," Daniels said. "Thank God there were no injuries, it was just an inconvenience to customers."
There are few road crossings along the New Haven Line of Metro-North. All of them are on the branch lines for New Canaan, Danbury and Waterbury.
This was the second train vs. a vehicle accident this week in Fairfield County.
On Sunday morning, a Metro-North train — running without passengers on the New Canaan branch — struck a city plow truck at the crossing on Riverbend Drive in Stamford. Train service had been suspended from the weekend snowstorm, and the empty train was checking the tracks when the accident occurred. No one was injured in that crash, either.
