The service has issued a wind chill warning in effect from 4 p.m. Saturday until noon Sunday. Officials with the Weather Service said wind chills could reach as low as 25 to 30 degrees below zero in northern Fairfield County, with northwest winds of 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph.
They are also warning residents to be extremely careful if they need to venture outside due to the very low temperatures and winds that could result in frostbite and hypothermia, as well as dangerous driving conditions.
Temperatures on Sunday are only expected to reach into the low teens.
Coastal residents should also be on the ready for subzero temperatures as the front moves into the coastal areas, said the National Weather Service.
A wind chill watch is in effect from Saturday afternoon through Sunday morning with temperatures dipping below 25 degrees below zero with the coldest period being late Saturday night.
Winds are expected to gust 15 to 25 mph, with occasional gusts of 40 mph that could result in some coastal flooding.
A wind chill watch mean that there is potential for a combination of very cold air and strong winds to create dangerously low wind chill temperatures.
