Danbury Woman Granted Clemency In Drowning Death Of Her Baby

DANBURY, Conn. -- The state pardon board granted clemency to a former Danbury resident convicted of drowning her newborn daughter, according to the News Times.

Panna Krom pled guilty in 2008 to manslaughter and was sentenced to 18 years in prison stemming from the 2006 incident, the News Times reported. The saga began with Krom hiding a pregnancy from her parents, whom she believed would disapprove, the News Times reported. Her mother found the baby dead wrapped in a sweatshirt in the closet, according to the News Times.

Krom's attorney argued that her sentence was excessive compared to convictions for similar crimes, the News Times reported. Danbury State’s Attorney Stephen Sedensky argued against the release, citing the horrendous nature of the crime and adding that if not for clemency, she would have been eligible for parole in January 2019, the News Times reported.

Krom is expected to be released from prison on Sept. 30, according to News Times.
