Danbury Sells Thousands Worth Of Surplus Vehicles

DANBURY, Conn. – Danbury’s Purchasing Department sold 40 surplus vehicles Wednesday during an auction that generated more than $20,000 for the city’s coffers.

Many of the vehicles were not in running condition, but some of the old Ford Crown Victoria police cruisers and Ford Explorers were operational, according to the city’s Purchasing Agent Charles Volpe.

“Everything sold,” said Volpe, admitting that he was a bit surprised considering the condition of many of the vehicles. “In fact, everything surpassed our initial expectations.”

Volpe did not yet have an official tally of the exact amount raised by the auction, but he said he was confident that it was more than $20,000. The most expensive item was a Crown Vic that sold for a “few thousand dollars.”

The auction was conducted by The Hamilton Group, LLC, a Clinton, Conn.-based liquidator and auction house.

Roughly 50 people showed up for the auction, which Volpe said the city conducts every 18 to 24 months or so, as the city’s Police, Public Works and other departments cycle through and replace cars and trucks.
