Anny Castillo, 22, was arrested in July and charged with abandonment of a child under the age of 6 years, risk of injury, and cruelty to persons. The arrest stems from the abandonment of a newborn baby boy on May 21, according to police. The baby had been found behind a supermarket on Main Street, police said.

Castillo has pleaded not guilty to the charge, and her attorney said after a court appearance on Friday that he will seek a mental health evaluation, according to WLAD. She had told police that she wasn't aware of the state's Safe Haven law, which allows parents to drop off newborns at hospitals without facing repercussions, WLAD reported.
The baby boy is doing well and is in foster care, according to WLAD. The next court appearance for Castillo will be on Oct. 13, WLAD reported.
