Cop Busted On Drug Charges, Abandoned Baby Top The Week's News In Danbury

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. — A Fairfield police narcotics detective was charged with stealing drugs from the department, and a newborn baby was found alive behind a grocery store in Danbury. Those were two of the top stories this past week in Fairfield County. 

Here are some of the top stories: 

Detective Stephen Rilling, 40, the Head Narcotics Investigator for Fairfield police since April 2011, was charged with stealing drugs from cases he was involved in, according to police. He is the son of Harry Rilling, who is the Norwalk mayor and the former Norwalk police chief. 

Five days after a newborn baby was found behind a Main Street grocery store, his mother walked into the lobby of the Danbury Police Department. The boy was found wrapped in adult clothing, and police had released photos of the clothing and the 911 call reporting the abandoned baby in an effort to find the woman. Police are still investigating, but the baby and mother are in "general good health," police said.

The senior picnic and senior yearbook-signing party have been canceled after a senior prank gone wrong at Fairfield Ludlowe High School. Headmaster Greg Hatzis watermelons, meant to be left as decorations, were smashed in hallways, walls, the senior lounge and bathrooms, making a huge mess for the custodial staff to clean up.

A fire in the kitchen of a New Canaan home was started when cats accidentally turned on a propane stove.

Connecticut Avenue in Norwalk will soon be home to not one but two fast-food chicken restaurants. A construction crew is hard at work at 497 Connecticut Ave. on the Popeye's Louisiana Kitchen. And just up the road at 467 Connecticut Ave. is another construction project: the new Chick-fil-A. 

Theodore Huber, a 55-year-old Westport resident and a hedge fund partner, was one of four people arrested in New York in an insider trading scheme based on confidential government Medicaid and Medicare information.

The new Pour Me Coffee & Wine Cafe will hold its soft opening on Monday at 274 Main St. in Danbury. The establishment, which offer breakfast burritos, paninis, poutines, personal pizzas, salads, gluten-free smoothies, vegan choices, and a kids menu, will also offer full dinner service after 5 p.m.

Fairfield's Kristen Geary, who set out in February to tackle the 2,181 miles of the Appalachian Trail, celebrated a milestone last week as she made it back to Connecticut. That's 1,456 miles down, only 725 more miles to go for the former GE intern.

A 43-year-old New Haven man was found shot to death in the head on Railroad Avenue near Went Field Park in Bridgeport, police said.

Steven M. Flood, 32, of New Fairfield man was charged with murder and sexual assault in the death of a 55-year-old woman he lived with, police said. 

An online petition is gathering steam in an effort to stop an American Dog Club store from opening in the Westfield Trumbull mall. The organizer of the petition says that while pet stores look cute, the treatment of the dogs is substandard.

Robert N. Bertrand, a Norwalk resident who serves as CFO at the "Soup Nazi" restaurants made famous on "Seinfeld," was indicted on 20 counts of failure to pay Medicare, Social Security, and federal income taxes.

Derrick Siberon, of Bridgeport was charged with first-degree manslaughter in the death of his 10-month-old son last month, police said.
