Todd Macaluso was taken into custody by federal authorities on Nov. 14, the News-Times reported. Macaluso helped defend Anthony in 2008 when she was accused and later found not guilty of murdering her 2-year-old daughter, a case that made national headlines.
Federal authorities told the News-Times that Macaluso had planned to use a jet owned by the Danbury-based Maule Group to smuggle 1,500 kilograms of cocaine from Haiti to the U.S. He devised a plan and met with co-conspirators in Haiti to discuss it, where federal agents recorded his meeting and took him and his co-conspirators into custody, according to the News-Times.
Macaluso was charged with conspiracy to distribute cocaine and will appear in court on Jan. 13, the News-Times reported.
A representative for the group that owns the jet told the News-Times that Macaluso had once owned it, and that he had rented it. He did not have permission to fly it to Haiti, and no drugs were ever taken on board the craft, the News-Times reported. The plane has since been confiscated by authorities, according to the News-Times.
