Bear Patiently Waits, Eats In A Downtown Danbury Tree

DANBURY, Conn. - Residents near Main Street and Wooster Street in downtown Danbury were surprised to hear there a bear had taken up residence in a tree Tuesday morning.

The bear is in a tree in a parking lot behind the Bishop Curtis Homes on Main Street across from the historic Wooster Street Cemetery. The parking lot also serves St. Peter's-Sacred Heart School and the YMCA of Western Connecticut.

Fire Chief Geoff Herald said a special team from the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection was on its way to tranquilize and remove the bear.

"We will help with ladder truck to remove him if necessary. Is it a him?" Herald said. "Nobody is going to get anything else done today."

The Danbury Fire Department, Police Department, DEEP, Mayor Mark Boughton, residents of Bishop Curtis and a ZUMBA class from the Y were on the scene watching.

Wooster is blocked from Main Street to Grand Street. And cars are starting to park everywhere as more onlookers arrive.

The bear, meanwhile, just keeps eating and dropping branches into the parking lot.
