The books are delivered as part of the United Way's Imagination Library program. The program mails a high-quality, age-appropriate book each month to children from birth to age 5.

"We wanted the mail carriers to know the impact these books have to the children and families on their route," Monet Borione of United Way of Western Connecticut said in a statement. "Each book is a treasure and brings joy to thousands of local families each month. This book collection creates hours of bonding time with their caregivers, increases enthusiasm for reading, and helps prepare children for success in Kindergarten and beyond."

The goal of the program, founded by country singer Dolly Parton in 1996, is to foster excitement about books and reinforce the impact of reading together as a family.

As part of the "thank you," local children signed a certificate of appreciation and also left a letter in their mailbox to thank their mail carriers for bringing their books.
