Events will occur throughout Oct. 20 at various locations in the city. The event include:
- 9:30 a,m.: A hike up Pine Mountain (meet near the top of Pine Mountain Road).
- 11:30 a.m.: Visit Ives' birth home on Mountainville Avenue (meet at the home).
- 12:30 p.m.: Visit Ives' gravesite in Wooster Cemetery (meet in Section M, off Ellsworth Avenue).
- 2 p.m.: A musical presentation featuring the Brass Guild Quintet and the Pine Mountain String Quartet at the Tarrywile Mansion, 70 Southern Blvd.
Contact the Danbury Music Centre at 203-748-1716 if you are going on the hike up Pine Mountain so the group can have an accurate head count.
Ives, who was born in 1874 and died in 1954, was a modernist composer and one of the first American composers of international renown, even though his music largely was unknown during his life.
He later came to be regarded as an American original who combined the American popular and church-music traditions of his youth with European art music, and was among the first composers to engage in various musical techniques, including polytonality, polyrhythm, tone clusters, aleatoric elements and quarter tones.
