DANBURY, Conn. — The new principal at Immaculate High School in Danbury has previously been a teacher at Ridgefield High School, dean of students at Joel Barlow High School in Redding and principal at St. Jude in Monroe.

On July 1, Patrick D. Higgins, a Bethel resident, will take over the top job at Immaculate, which is part of the Diocese of Bridgeport’s parochial school system.

Higgins replaces Joe Carmen, who resigned in summer 2016 to become director of leadership development at Quinnipiac University. School President Mary Maloney has been interim principal for the past year.

One of Higgins’ goals is to build stronger partnerships with area Roman Catholic elementary schools—especially in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics.

“This also applies to Catholic and public universities in our region, and along with our excellent and dedicated faculty and staff we will continue to make Immaculate High School a leader in curricular innovation, instructional delivery and educational excellence for our students and their families while providing an outstanding Catholic educational experience that will last a lifetime,” he said.

Higgins is a professionally certified Connecticut public educator with endorsements in Social Studies and Grades Pre-K to 12 School Administration. From 1991 to 2011, Higgins taught college preparatory, advanced and AP Social Studies courses at Ridgefield High, and from he 2011-13 served as dean of students and director of student activities at Joel Barlow.

He holds a bachelor's in justice and law administration, a master's in history and international relations, as well as a doctorate in instructional leadership and education psychology from Western Connecticut State University in addition to a professional teacher certification from Sacred Heart University.

As Principal of St. Jude School, Higgins was responsible for administrative operations that included serving as a teaching principal and instructional leader for his colleagues.

Higgins and his wife Tammy, a cardiac nurse practitioner at Danbury Hospital, are parishioners of St. Mary Church. They have two grown children.
