DANBURY, Conn. -- The third annual Western Day of Service will prompt students at Western Connecticut State University to help a variety of local charitable organizations and agencies in the Danbury area.

“The goal of the Day of Service is to connect the university with the community. It’s also a good opportunity for students to become more familiar with the Greater Danbury area,” student leader Rebecca Antonaccio said.

The event will begin with a welcome reception and ceremony at 8:30 a.m. Friday at Ives Concert Hall in White Hall on the university’s midtown campus, 181 White St., Danbury, with speeches by Mayor Mark Boughton and WCSU President John B. Clark.

"John Board, another student leader working with WDS, has also done outstanding work expanding visibility of the WDS through multiple social media efforts,” said WCSU Dean of Students Walter Cramer. According to Cramer, Antonaccio "has done a great job of reaching out to the Danbury community to expand the number of organizations we are working with and building a good buzz on campus for students, faculty and staff participation."

After the ceremony, about 500 WCSU students, faculty and staff will volunteer at a variety of activities to help area organizations and those they serve. Work will include raking, trimming, weeding, cleaning offices, washing firetrucks, moving books, working with animals, picking up trash and painting. For those who cannot attend the event, the opening ceremony will be streamed live on the university’s homepage at this link

“I’m proud of the work we’ve accomplished and look forward to this year’s Day of Service,” said Board.
