The agreement provides WCHN physicians and staff with access to the Mayo Clinic’s extensive menu of more than 3,000 laboratory tests in every subspecialty of medicine, and will enable WCHN laboratory staff and practitioners to speak directly with Mayo physicians and scientists to review patient test orders and collaboratively interpret results.
“Much like WCHN, Mayo Clinic is a fully integrated hospital, research facility and educational institution,” says Paul Fiedler, chair of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at WCHN. “This integrated and collaborative approach strengthens our own efforts as we are working with families to find answers – not just test results – and determine next steps in the care of their loved ones.”
Specimens obtained at WCHN will be transported via express-air to Mayo Clinic’s campus in Rochester, Minn., with results often available the following day through a computer interface that enters the information directly into each patient’s medical record.
Additionally, Mayo Medical Laboratories will work closely with WCHN to enhance the test menu of WCHN-performed tests through a suite of consultation and support services, building the capacity and skills of all the clinicians involved.

Together, we will provide the highest quality laboratory tests at an affordable price for the patients who need these tests.”
Fiedler said WCHN’s laboratory staff members perform over 3 million laboratory tests each year.
“Mayo Medical Laboratories will help us expand and diversify in-house lab testing at WCHN,” he added. “As a result of this relationship, patients and physicians will benefit from the knowledge of a worldwide network of experts when it’s needed.”
