The seven-week program is for kids from pre-school through grade 12 and this year's theme "Every Hero Has a Story" will promote superheroes, as well as everyday heroes.
Danbury Library has offered the program for more than 20 years as a way to encourage children and teens to maintain their current reading level during the summer months.
Kids will set their own weekly reading goals by the number of hours spent reading. Each eligible child will receive a free book for registering with the Super Power Readers Club, courtesy of Macy’s and Reading is Fundamental, while supplies last.
Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton is encouraging kids entering grades 1-8 to read through his yearly reading challenge. Children who read the stipulated amounts will receive an invitation to a recognition ceremony at City Hall in August.
The Bossy Frog Band will kick off the series with a superhero party at the library's plaza from 5-6:30 p.m. Wednesday. Children can register for the reading program at the party.
The reading program will include programs throughout the summer, such as weekly bingo games and Community Heroes Storytimes and Dancing with Hoops from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. June 25.
