PriceRite discount supermarket will fill the empty space on Main Street formerly occupied by an A&P grocery store, Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton announced in late November. The new store will create 125 full- and part-time jobs for local residents and provide healthy food at low prices, Boughton said.

The supermarket is set to open in May after $5 million worth of renovations are completed. The city fought to get a grocery store to fill the empty space because the property has served as a food source for the past 40 to 50 years, Boughton said. The store will offer food at prices 30 percent to 50 percent lower than name brand prices and give residents nutritious food at bulk prices, he said.

PriceRite has stores in Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island and keeps prices low by not using traditional advertising and requiring customers to bring their own bags, according to the chain’s website.
