FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – After a new increase in state taxes took effect Monday and with the Independence Day holiday on Thursday, drivers in northern Fairfield County are looking for the lowest gas prices.

Connecticut, which has the third highest gas tax in the nation, charges consumers a 25 cents a gallon excise tax and a second tax paid by gasoline distributors that just increased by 3.6 cents from 21 cents a gallon to nearly 24.6 cents a gallon. That is passed on to customers at the pump.

The average price of regular gas in Connecticut is currently $3.74 per gallon, according to gasbuddy.com. That's 25 cents higher than the national average of $3.49.
