DANBURY, Conn. — The Mothership is about to land on Main Street in Danbury. To be exact, Mothership on Main will be at 331 Main St., dishing up meals in the former home of a soccer club.

The second location of the Mothership Bakery and Cafe at 44 Old Ridgebury Road in Danbury, operated by Anna Llanos and her business partner Andrea White, will open for business on Friday.

This is good news for anyone living or working in downtown Danbury. Just like the Old Ridgebury Road location, Mothership on Main will serve “made from scratch” food for breakfast and lunch.

It all began when Anna Llanos and her husband, Mark, converted an old Airstream mobile home into a kitchen on wheels — the original Mothership. Before they knew it, the Mothership had attracted a devoted customer base out on Ridgebury Road off Exit 2 of I-84.

From there, Mothership found a stationary home base as a cafe in the Ridgebury Corporate Park. They also have a location serving the Danbury offices of the firm Belimo, but that spot is not open to the public. Now, only a little more than four years since they got their start, the next location that will welcome the public is about to open.

But taking this step wasn’t always a given.

“When the Nolans first approached us, we said no, initially,” Llanos said. “But the idea grew on us. We’re so excited.”

“Once we got downtown and started talking to people, we realized this could work,” White said. “We wanted to know from people, do you need/want our food?”

The answer was a resounding yes.

“Everyone likes scratch-made food,” Llanos said.

The other thing everyone seems to like is the happy atmosphere Llanos maintains in her kitchen. She imbues Mothership Bakery with her innate sense of hospitality. The joy she takes in creating the food she serves shines through.

“I get to experience working in this kitchen, it’s just so fun!” Llanos said. “I love feeding people, and getting to work with this staff.”

There is a palpable sense of camaraderie among the Old Ridgebury Road staff of Mothership. Llanos attributes it to the way everyone supports each other. She explained that, as many staff members are mothers, they understand the demands on each other’s time and the occasional necessity for someone to tend to a family matter, so they all pull together.

White and Llanos feel their partnership melds their complementary strengths.

“Anna stretches me in creativity and faith and trust, and I pull her into the land of spreadsheets,” White said. While White gravitates toward the business side of things, she’s no slouch in a kitchen, either.

“She’s a wonderful cook,” Llanos said.

“Our husbands have always been well fed,” White admitted.

The women piloting the Mothership expansion look forward to welcoming people to the new location.

"We have a space for people to enjoy great food, great company, and really feel like they're at home," White said.

Mothership on Main will start earlier and stay open later, and be open Saturdays and Sundays as well, White said. They will also serve brunch.

In addition to baked goods, breakfasts and lunches, Mothership will continue to offer catering.

"We're excited to host events," Llanos said, including business meetings, baby showers and birthday parties.

"It's a bright and sunny space," White said.

As for what the future holds, the ladies aren't saying yet.

"We just want to get there and enjoy that moment, that accomplishment," Llanos said of the grand opening.

The plan is for Mothership on Main to open before Thanksgiving. The Mothership Bakery and Cafe at 44 Old Ridgebury Road remains open to the public.
