18 Rescued Following Westport Rowing Club Accident At Compo Beach
Eighteen teens and juveniles, in addition to several others, were rescued after three rowing sculls overturned and the chase boat took on water at a Fairfield County beach. The incident occurred off Westport off Compo Beach on Long Island Sound around 5 p.m., Wednesday, March 20. According to Lt. School Bus Driver Trapped, Several Students Injured In Westport Crash
A school bus carrying children crashed in Westport, trapping the driver, and slightly injuring several children. The crash took place around 8:15 a.m., Friday, Feb. 7, at the intersection of Sylvan Road North and Orchard Hill Road in Westport, said Westport Police Lt. Anthony Prezioso. Prezioso said initial findings at the scene show that the bus had been traveling southbound on Sylvan Road North approaching Orchard Hill Road when it veered off the roadway striking a traffic sign, stone wall and large tree causing significant front end damage. Staples HS Welcomes New Principal
The Westport Board of Education has named a veteran educator to take over at the helm of Staples High School. The Board announced on Thursday that Stafford W. Thomas, Jr. will succeed Principal James D’Amico, who announced earlier this year that he was resigning to take over at his hometown high school in New Fairfield. Thomas will take over on July 1, when D’Amico’s resignation officially takes effect. He was unanimously approved by the Board at a meeting on Thursday, June 20. Westport Schools Superintendent Resigns
Following a trying year, Westport Schools Superintendent Colleen Palmer announced that she will be resigning from her position before the 2019-2020 academic year. In a letter to parents this week, the Westport Board of Education announced that Palmer plans to retire from the district, effective on Aug. 1, just two years after she left the Weston School District to take over in Westport. The announcement comes weeks after it was announced that Coleytown Middle School will likely not open before January 2020 due to ongoing mold issues. The Westport Board of Education has come up with a plan for its students after hundreds were displaced due to an ongoing mold issue at the Coleytown Middle School. Earlier this year, the middle school was forced to shut down for the year due to an ongoing mold problem. The emergency closure left the 450 Coleytown elementary school students and staff split between Bedford Middle School and Staples High School.
