Area Student-Athlete Dies At 17 After Battling Cancer A student-athlete who was entering his senior year at John F. Kennedy Catholic High School in Somers has died after a battle with cancer. Brendan James Maguire, 17, of Patterson died on Monday, Aug 20. He had been diagnosed with osteosarcoma 14 months ago. He played both basketball and baseball at Kennedy Catholic, where his courage and faith, displayed throughout his illness, inspired all those around him. He is survived by his parents, Ellen and Rory Maguire; sisters, Meghan and Ciara; maternal grandparents, Joe and Pat McGann; and many loving aunts, uncles and cousins. He was predecease…

15-Year-Old Killed In Northern Westchester ATV Crash A 15-year-old high school student was killed after he lost control of his all-terrain vehicle in Northern Westchester late Friday morning. State police said the crash occurred at around 11:30 a.m. on Blackberry Hill Road in Somers, just south of Somers High School and opposite Reis Park. The boy killed has been identified as Reece Ferrara of Somers. The ATV struck a concrete mailbox pillar, ejecting Ferrara from the vehicle, according to state police. He was transported to Westchester Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.
