No Data Caps For Now: Comcast To Delay Heavily-Criticized Plan To Limit Internet
Comcast’s highly-criticized move to implement internet data caps is being delayed. On Friday, Feb. 18, Connecticut Attorney General William Tong issued a statement welcoming Comcast’s announcement that they will postpone, what he called an “ill-timed” data cap until 2022. Comcast’s planned data caps went into effect on Jan. 1, in 12 states - including Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania - plus Washington, D.C. The data caps were envisioned long before the pandemic hit. “Delaying this ill-timed data cap until at least 2022 is the right call. I have heard from…

19: College Students To Sub For Teachers In Quarantine
Connecticut is seeking to use college and university students to fill staffing gaps at public schools reeling from COVID-19 infections. On Tuesday, Dec. 1, Gov. Ned Lamont expounded on a plan to recruit college students to work as substitute teachers, either on a volunteer or paid basis, in the state's public schools. The state has had to get creative due to a lack of available teachers during the pandemic. The requirement that people exposed to COVID-19 quarantine for 14 days has left many schools in Connecticut and neighboring Massachusetts short-staffed. With not enough faculty and st…

19: New Studies Shed Light On Connection Between Reopening Schools, Virus Cases
Despite a recent rise in COVID-19 cases across the nation in the past two months, there may not be as large a correlation between the new cases and schools reopening in the fall, according to newly released studies. International researchers found that there is no consistent relationship between the spread of the virus and the opening of in-person K-12 learning in a pair of newly released studies. According to NPR, a third study in the United States also found that there is no elevated risk of contracting COVID-19 for childcare workers who returned to the classroom. The report found that t…

19: More Than 12 Connecticut School Districts Close Buildings
More than a dozen Connecticut schools have been temporarily closed due to COVID-19. The tally comes on the heels of Gov. Ned Lamont’s Monday, Sept. 14, comment, that schools should not close for a single COVID-19 infection. Some of the schools that close did so after a single case, others had discovered multiple cases. Some schools have scrapped plans for in-person classes and went for a fully remote education. Here are the school districts, according to Patch, that have temporarily closed one or more school buildings: Bridgeport East Hartford Hartford Killingly Manchester Naugatuc…

19: Yale Says It Will Hold Almost All Courses Online This Fall
Yale University is set to welcome students back to campus in the fall, though there will be extensive, protocols in place and the majority of courses held online due to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. When Yale reopens in the fall, it will do so without sophomores living on campus, and when students return for the spring semester, it will be without freshmen living on campus to slow the spread of the virus. In a letter to the community, Yale’s president and provost announced the contingency plan for students and staff, which includes testing and temperature checks as per state an…
