President-elect Donald Trump nominated former Florida congressman and physician Dave Weldon to serve as director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Whole Foods Will Become First National Grocer To Ban Plastic Straws
Get ready to say goodbye to plastic straws, Whole Foods shoppers, the supermarket chain has officially announced that it will be the first national grocer to eliminate the product from its stores. By July, the retailer announced that it will remove plastic straws from all Whole Foods-operated venues. This includes Allegro coffee bars, juice bars and cafes. The ban includes all of the grocer’s locations throughout the United States as well as Canada and the United Kingdom. The following is Part 2 in a two-part series of stories on single-use bag fees in Fairfield County. Towns in Fairfield County that have enacted plastic bag ban ordinances are now focusing efforts on communication. Many towns and cities in Connecticut have enacted bans on plastic bag use and others have ordinances in place that will take effect this year. Gas Prices Reach Five-Year March Peak
Both New York and Connecticut have entered the “drivers’ dozen” and are among the 12 states with the highest gas prices in the country. Nationally, as of Tuesday, March 26, the average price at the pump has hit $2.65 per gallon, up nine cents from a week ago and 25 cents from a month ago. Plastic Bag Ban Approved By Stamford Board
Stamford joined Greenwich and Westport in approving a future ban on single-use plastic bags in that city. On Monday, Oct. 1, Stamford's Board of Representatives in voted in favor of the ban, which begins in six months. Stamford's board also approved charging 10 cents to customers who use recyclable paper bags instead of bringing their own reusable bags. The new city ordinance calls for the paper bags be 100 percent recyclable and contain at least 40 percent recycled content. Greenwich's ban went into effect on Sept. 12, also six months after its passage, as reported here by Daily Voice.

Stamford Latest Fairfield County Locale To Eye Plastic Bag Ban
They are spreading like plastic bags. The City of Stamford joined Greenwich in weighing a ban against the use of plastic shopping bags. The idea of a bag ban has been taken up City of Stamford Board of Representatives’ Legislative & Rules Committee. Members who met last week agreed they want to restrict use of plastic bags.
