Leafy Greens With Listeria Sold At Area Grocery Stores, New Test Reveals
Listeria has been found in leafy greens from a variety of grocery store chains in New York, Connecticut and New Jersey, according to Consumer Reports.
The nonprofit organization says six of 284 samples bought from Acme, Costco, Hannaford and Whole Foods stores were tainted with listeria monocytogenes. The items purchased included lettuce, spinach, and kale.
Consumer Reports says it found the bacteria in both unbagged and prewashed products.
Mild Listeria symptoms may include a fever, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, according to the Food & Drug Administration. I…

Food safety experts at Consumer Reports are advising people in the U.S. and Canada to stop eating romaine lettuce after an outbreak of E. coli, including at least two cases in Connecticut.
In the past seven weeks, at least 58 people in the U.S. and Canada have become ill from E. coli believed to be linked to romaine lettuce.
One person in each country has died.
In the U.S., the infections have been confirmed in 13 states — California, Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Vermont, and Washington.
