A Massachusetts man who beat his estranged wife to death with a hammer as she slept will spend at least the next 25 years in prison, authorities said. Michael A. Cook Sr., of North Adams in Berkshire Country, was convicted of second-degree murder last week and was sentenced to life in prison on Thursday, Oct. 10, the Berkshire County District Attorney's Office said. A 70-year-old tractor-trailer driver from Connecticut will spend time in prison for his role in a crash on the Massachusetts Turnpike that left a man dead. Police are appealing to the public for help in finding the driver of an SUV who failed to stop after striking a student on the UMass Amherst campus. The incident took place around 10:15 p.m. Monday, March 21, as the 20-year-old man was walking in a crosswalk, said Laurie Loisel, spokeswoman for the Northwestern District Attorney's Office. A man and woman were hospitalized after a serious two-vehicle crash overnight in Connecticut. It happened around 8:20 p.m. Friday, May 21 in Hartford County, on Route 5 (Enfield Street) at the intersection of Bright Meadow Boulevard in Enfield. The collision was between a 2007 Volvo XC70 driven by a 54-year-old man and a 2007 Yamaha XVS65 motorcycle operated by a 31-year old man who had a 35-year-old female passenger, Enfield Police said. An escalating fight by text message on Snapchat led to the death of a 16-year-old student and the arrest of an 18-year-old for manslaughter. Shyhiem Adams of Hartford was charged late Monday with manslaughter following a fight in front of an Enfield home that ended with the stabbing death of Justin Brady, Enfield Police said.
