Air Quality Alert: Widespread Smoke From Canadian Wildfires Lingers Throughout Region
An Air Quality Alert is in effect for much of the Northeast as smoke drifting south from more than 400 Canadian wildfires lingers. Air quality levels in outdoor air are predicted to be greater than an Air Quality Index value of 100 for the pollutant of fine particulates, according to the National Weather Service. "The higher the AQI value, the greater the health concern," said the weather service. Get set for the most extreme days in the first heat wave of 2019 as power companies are bracing for a surge in energy consumption. An Excessive Heat Warning is in until 8 p.m. Sunday, July 21 with heat index values (the combination of the high temperature and humidity) up to around 110 degrees on Saturday, July 20 and around 105 degrees for Sunday. Here comes the hottest stretch this summer, and the first heat wave of 2019. Extreme heat and humidity starting on Friday, July 19 will last through the weekend. An Excessive Heat Warning is in effect from noon Friday until 8 p.m. Sunday, July 21. Friday's high temperature will be right around 90 degrees under mostly sunny skies. Severe Weather Alert: Here's When Gusty, Scattered Storms Will Sweep Through Area
A storm system with gusty, scattered severe thunderstorms will sweep through the area and bring some relief from the heat. The primary threat from the storms, which will arrive Saturday afternoon, June 29 and continue through the evening, will be damaging wind gusts, the National Weather Service said.
