It was the Regional YMCA State Championships where the Brookfield Regional YMCA's Mako Swim Team took second place overall in 13 and over.
The girls team earned 487 points, coming in third behind the Wilton Wahoos in first place, and the New Canaan YMCA Caimans came in second.
The boys’ team earned 598 points for second place, following closely on the heels of the Wilton Wahoos in first. The combined team score was 1,085, second only to the Wilton Wahoos.
First- and second-place events and times include: Girls 13-14 100-yard backstroke, Leiya Istambouli of Danbury, 1:03.14; Girls 13-14 50-yard freestyle, Leiya Istambouli, 26.15; Boys 13- 14 200-yard freestyle, Andrew Yu of Brookfield, 1:57.37; and Boys 13-14 100-yard backstroke, Andrew Yu, 1:00.46.
Mako girls ages 13-14 placed second in the 200-yard freestyle relay (Leiya Istambouli, Anna Weinstein, Emma Padros, and Amanda Neeb) with a time of 1:46.83.
Mako boys ages 13-14 also placed second in the 200-yard freestyle relay (Andrew Yu, Timmy Regan, K.C. Green, and Timothy Turnbull) with a time of 1:42.43. The 9-12 Connecticut YMCA State Championships will take place on January 28 in Cheshire. The 8 and over; Under Makos group competes on Feb. 5 at Canterbury School in New Milford.
